For what it's worth, I thought Bartlett showed some genuine compassion for Amalia at the end of the scene.
I agree, although the moment where he sees the rose on the ground is in the script. But yes, he did play it a bit more honestly there.
And yes, the role is very easy - too easy - to play over the top, and I've seen it before too. Just that there was something about Bartlett that really seemed beyond eccentric. Was he trying to play it drunk? I've seen the role approached a bit more Type A/"stick in the mud" before, which I think works a bit better than how I perceived Bartlett. |
