The Hamilton Mixtape album was not submitted in the Musical Theater category. I'm not sure what the eligibility rules are and whether it was ineligible or they just didn't submit it. It was not submitted in any genre category.
The principal soloists are supposed to be on tracks that are at least 51% of the playing time of the album. I don't think anyone checks, though. Hamilton clearly abused that by having 10 principal soloists. There is no way Jonathan Groff was on 51% of the album! I've never seen another album in this category with more than 3 principal soloists. The Hamilton situation really sticks out.
Someone posted elsewhere that there needed to be 40 eligible recordings in order for there to be 5 nominees. I would agree with you that Sunday in the Park and Great Comet would have almost certainly been the other two. |
