Wayman, thanks for pointing out the abundance of principal soloists for all the nominees in 2016. The principal soloists have only been eligible for 7 years, but that year, all nominees had at least 5 principal soloists. In all the other years before and since, only 2 nominees had more than 3: Follies (the 4 main roles and Elaine Paige) and Matilda (the four Matildas, Bertie Carvel and Lauren Ward -- so really only 3 roles).
One trivia point: only 2 people have been nominated twice for principal soloist: Danny Burstein and Jessie Mueller.
I had forgotten Next to Normal wasn't nominated. The other big show that year, Billy Elliot, didn't get nominated either, even with 5 nominees. Very strange. |
