David Thompson "revised" the book. It's actually an entirely new book using some of the characters created by Joe Stein. Schwartz was on hand for the process and he and Strouse wrote new songs as well as reassigning existing ones to different characters and situations. Thompson and director Rob Ruggiero were the prime movers in the premiere of this revised version.
