AEA (actors, stage managers) and ATPAM (company and house managers, and press agents) require their members to work an extra performance (9th, usually) for nothing. I'm not sure if any others have the same requirement. Most of the other unions require payment and then "urge" their members to donate it back.
In the old days, these payments to musicians, crew etc were made in cash money through the box office and then deducted from the money they sent the Actors Fund. But that's illegal because of taxes so the practice was stopped some time in the 1980s I believe. |
