Agreed that Broadway is less regional than it was. Not sure that the Simon play became obsolete because his audience became less Jewish. The audiences of THE BANDS VISIT or DEAR EVAN HANSON feel awfully similar to the demographic that used to see a Simon play. But a Broadway audience no longer grows up hearing operettas and seeing Americanized stage versions of French and English farces as Simon's early audience did. Simon's early plays were highly skilled but they were tailored for an audience that no longer exists, not just in its ethnic makeup but in its tastes and theatrical memory. That doesn't mean his plays are irrelevant, sturdy craftsmanship can be surprisingly durable.
