| This year marks the 20th anniversary of Tom Andersen's recording of ''Yard Sale,'' from his award-winning CD, ''The Journey.'' Acclaimed as one of the most moving songs about AIDS, it's been recorded and performed by numerous cabaret/pop singers around the world, most notably Australian star David Campbell (on his 1997 CD, ''Taking the Wheel''). And it won 1998's MAC Award (cabaret's Oscar) for Song of the Year. In an interview with Talkin' Broadway, Tom told Jonathan Frank: ''It was inspired by a next-door neighbor of mine in S.F. who had a sale of all his belongings. This was during the '80s, when AIDS came crashing down on all of us. I felt helpless, like everyone else, so I wrote 'Yard Sale' as a catharsis. David Campbell recorded it beautifully and helped get it out there, and I'm so moved that it has touched so many people.'' Larry Flick of Billboard magazine raved: ''Far from being depressing, 'Yard Sale' offers a celebratory view of life, as well as a poignant look at loss. It's a beautiful, subtle and deeply affecting ballad. Andersen's vocal talent is matched by a flair for crafting memorable melodies and words that are gratefully free of cliches. Andersen has been gathering kudos in N.Y. cabaret for several years, and the time has come for a national breakthrough.'' At ''The Leading Men III,'' our 2008 benefit concert for Broadway Cares at Birdland, the incredible cast included Jonathan Groff, Aaron Lazar and Norm Lewis. But Seth Rudetsky, our musical director, wrote at Playbill.com: ''The men all sounded great, and I must give a special shout-out to Tom Andersen, who performed his signature 'Yard Sale.' ... It's so well-written and literally makes me cry as I play it! You must listen [to it].'' |
