In recent years I've seen regional productions of Brighton Beach Memoirs and Lost in Yonkers that were not only very funny but endearing slices of life from a bygone, kind of innocent era. Of course, both shows were well-cast and directed. I think it is really tough for this kind of show to be a hit today on Broadway today unless you can get someone like a Nathan Lane or Hugh Jackman to star in it.
