"Put On A Happy Face" is vitally necessary in Bye Bye Birdie. I'd go so far as to call it one of the most necessary songs in any musical. It's the song that gets us to root for Albert by showing us that he's somebody actually worth caring about (going out of his way to be kind to a couple of disappointed teenagers, when even speaking to them wouldn't be a requirement of his job), not just a bumbling drip and mama's boy. And Albert's being somebody worth caring about also strengthens Rosie, as it shows us she isn't a fool to be in love with him.
I'm also with ryhog, below, that "Miracle of Miracles" isn't a bad song. |
