"Me and the Sky" from COME FROM AWAY.
I have yet to understand why it behooves us to know that Beverley had a childhood dream to fly and that 9/11 kind of spoiled that for her by weaponizing planes. But only for a minute and but then she got over it.
In a show that is almost completely devoid of solos it's jarring to put an "I Want" song 2/3's of the way through. If the show had been structured to introduce the characters before the planes flew into the towers, I can see it being a decent launching song for Beverley (the beginning of it at least). But at that point in the show, it feels like so much: "THAT's what you're thinking about?"
Which isn't unrealistic, just tonally not what the show wants you to feel.
And Jenn Collella sings it with that crazy glint in her eye which only makes it more notable and significant, until you start thinking about it.
But then so much of the show is like that. "Welcome to the farthest place you'll get from Disneyland"? I would love to know if any Newfoundlander has ever thought or said that. IT'S NOT EVEN FACTUAL! If you wanted to drive from Anaheim to Gander you'd have to drive through Gander in order to get to St. John's, the capital of the province! |
