Well I think your first sentence is pretty faulty in the premise of the fault it finds... "It is a story set in a millennia old patriarchy, ruled by colonialism, and yet it presents a woman who can take heroic action." Since when is a woman taking heroic action inconsistent with a world of old patriarchy ruled by colonialism? Just because the world of the play (and the world of our society, especially then) was set up to suppress women, that doesn't mean that women didn't find agency and opportunity, against all odds even, to think for themselves or act out of the set standard or be heroic. This is not unique to Once On This Island, or children's stories, or stories, or real life.
