From critic Steven Wynn:
''Depending on your appetite for two hours and 20 minutes of bluegrass music and a melodramatic story full of crank-turned twists and resolutions, “Bright Star” may well light up your night. The show earned a best musical Tony nomination on Broadway (it was up against “Hamilton”), and the pedigrees of banjo-playing comedian, actor, author and playwright Martin and singer-songwriter Brickell as co-creators hold an inherent appeal. Both contributed to the score and book, which unfolds in a South so thoroughly, placidly segregated that a black person never appears or earns a mention.
''For others, the fluid staging may serve only to underscore how stubbornly sedentary long stretches of the narrative and music are. Even if you don’t see the heart-tugging endgame of the story coming, the conventional contours of too many scenes and songs exert a drag on the proceedings.''
(Is Lily Janiak on vacation? I'm usually not in sync with her reviews of musicals, so this was a nice change of pace.) |
