Caught last night's preview . Though far from the target audience, I heard enough positive word of mouth from Chicago and the other Bway message board that I was looking forward to seeing it..Perhaps I'm just an old crank but I really hated it. I've never seen a SpongeBob episode and basically had no idea what the hell was going on. Characters from the show would appear and huge ovations would greet them. They would roar in laughter at what most likely were catch phrases. To me the much lauded set looked cheap and ugly but perhaps reflected the visuals of the tv show. The plot was hard to follow mainiy because it elicited zero interest on my part. The music written by a variety of modern day pop composers was a mixed bag but did little to enhance the plot and whatever characterizations there were. A huge problem for me was the sound design which was so overdone and badly executed that everyone sounded disembodied and mechanical. Though skilled, the performances left me cold. I could go on but won't because I think that there is definitely an audience for this show i.e. fans of the cartoon, children (although some of the ones that I saw looked mighty bored) and perhaps stoners. (Oh maybe that would've helped). Suffice it to say I joined a significant group who left after Act One (something I virtually never do) but I really couldn't endure anymore.

PS For any theatergoer who is a stickler for theater decorum forget it. Since a large segment of the audience were children, there was insessant loud talking and parents who could not or would not shush them, many trips to the bathroom with the resulting climbing over people to get out, children sitting on their parents' laps which blocked the view etc, etc And this wasn't even a matinee!
