I guess there is a comment for everything...lol, but...
I have no proof the authors were thinking about this when they created the concept album, but certainly in performance it gives the actress playing Eva some much needed time off stage to take a breath, drink some water, whatever. Granted that has nothing to do with the story. In terms of story/structure, maybe they wanted a moment of quieter reflection, of something softer. A contrast to Eva's social climbing and Che's ranting. And you could argue a whole song is not worth creating just one moment later in the show, but when Juan turns "don't ask anymore" on "Eva" as she cries "where am I going to" after fainting and being close to death, it's pretty darn chilling. It makes a point about the characters and you wouldn't have that if you hadn't earlier seen the feelings of someone Eva callously turned out.
Or...they could have just been hoping to have a song on the pop charts, says the cynic in me! :-) |
