I saw the original production of The Humans at ATC in Chicago on 1/04/15 and the Broadway version on 5/22/16 at the Helen Hayes. I don't recall any substantial changes in the text between the two productions. However, at ATC the mysterious noises were less pronounced than they were on Broadway. When the Asian lady appeared thumping her walker at the play's end, for me that cleared up the mystery (at ATC). On Broadway because the noises were so much louder, my interpretation was that Erik alone thought they were unnaturally loud -- I believe it was really his guilty conscience (for how he betrayed his wife and let down his family) that made him experience the noises that way. My recollection is that Erik (at the play's end) sat alone in the dark for several minutes and then got up and left -- I think the weight of his guilt finally had been lifted off of him. After he left the apartment, the door slowly closed by itself -- it didn't slam shut.
