I was a bit surprised that Walnut Street decided to do this on their main stage, but there is some precedence -- they've done Other Desert Cities, Good People, and God of Carnage among other contemporary plays in the last few years. And the show is in their January through March slot, which Bernard Havard talked about pretty candidly in an interview with Phindie (see link for full article):

To start the new year, Havard selects a slightly more serious, “straight” play (non-musical): for 2015, the selection is Noel Coward’s Private Lives. “It’s because people generally are going away. A lot of our subscribers go away for Christmas holidays, get out of the cold for a few weeks and go to Florida.” For this reason, Havard feels that he doesn’t necessarily need to cater to his subscription-based audience. Instead, he can choose a play that is a little edgier and not quite the blockbuster of the summer and holiday productions.

I assume the combination of the play's somewhat-recognizable name and NYC success (Tony Award, yearlong Broadway run, etc) factored heavily in their decision to program it on the main stage. I don't know the full cast, but Greg Wood and Mary Martello are playing the parents, and Alex Keiper is playing the Sarah Steele role -- they're all popular Philly actors whom the audience will recognize from past WST productions too.
