Why is everyone drooling over this repugnant situation?
Schadenfreude and prurience. If it's really about a sincere hope for an industry wide change that puts in place greater checks and balances for sexual harassment or equity for women in the workplace I'm afraid we're going to be disappointed. So far the scrutiny has focused on the high, mighty and glamorous and there's been no accompanying push for any substantive change except for a few murmurs by Jackie Spier in Congress. At very high level jobs I'm sure there will be all sorts of new trainings devised by lawyers and consultants. But men and probably a lot of women in glamor industries who've reached a high level of success will always want to test the boundaries to see what they can get away with. It's a whole other currency unavailable to the rest of us. Will any of this reach the majority of work places in the US? Will it impact in a positive way the retail industry, restaurant industry, the military, police forces? I hope so but I very much doubt it. |
