I think you might have seen this production after having seen it before and are familiar enough with it to follow along. However, I was with someone who was completely unfamiliar with it. He couldn't even understand the lyrics to "Movie in My Mind" -- the performers slurred everything with no diction, including the woman playing Gigi. The ensemble singing was an amateur mess. However, he had no problem understanding the Engineer and the actor playing John and the woman playing Ellen. The the Ellen/Kim duet -- only Ellen was could be understood.
The "Chris" in the performance I saw who "is making his Broadway debut" was an embarrassment on so many levels. This was no Will Chase. And the poor Kim, who seems to be taking time off from college to be in this, could not only not sing the role and act it, but at times it looked like she was lost on the stage and didn't know exactly which way to turn. She certainly could barely muster up eye contact with her "Chris."
This is the best Broadway has to offer?
All in all, skip it. If you liked it before, this is a weak echo of anything you've seen before -- and you run the risk of getting the third tier performers in the leads. |
