I am fortunate to have your brave perspective on this-and your penultimate paragraph encapsulates all the "virtue signaling": annoying and diluting reasonable assessment of those who have a solid case.
some self-disclosure: I worked in a summer theatre my summer post graduation (very late '70s-summer stock was on the decline then), and was enthralled with the "oh boy" opportunities. it was rather exciting to have gotten to know (respecting delicate sensibilities here) the wardrobe master on Man of La Mancha and the villain magician in The Magic Show.
