I'm 50 and was completely unfamiliar with the Spongebob cartoon before seeing this musical. The idea of Tina Landau directing a children's musical intrigued me, and I had heard some positive word-of-mouth.
I did not enjoy this show. I was expecting something more tongue-in-cheek, self-aware, and ironic. I thought it might have the sensibility of, say, Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson or even Peter and the Statcatcher - two shows I thoroughly enjoyed. Not so. Spongebob plays it straight up, closer to what I imagine the television cartoon to be like. It seems geared towards an audience nostalgic for the Spongebob they grew up with. That isn't me.
There were some strong elements: 1) The design is gorgeous and expensive looking; 2) The actor playing Spongebob is FANTASTIC, but I would have rather seen him replace Ben Platt in DEH.
I had an excellent TDF seat - Mezz Row B - a perfect vantage point from which to appreciate the imaginative set. |
