It's incredibly ugly and depressing. Unfortunately, the reporting (and judgment from others) makes the situation worse. Harrassment/predatory behavior even gross inappropriateness or fetishes in the wrong situation (yes you Louis CK) is unacceptable. As a woman who worked on Wall Street for many years, I've always been aware that these things happen....and, like many, my first experience with harassment did not happen in the theater or on the job...but rather when I was babysitting and the father came home drunk....its probably why I don't like blond men :).
That said, the internet and reports and allegations is exhausting....and while I think the open atmosphere seems to make many people feel better....less alone....it strikes me as somewhat generational (I'm in my early 50s...but only on my drivers license)....for me it smacks of that rush to be part of "something" that is part of today's American culture...That these things happen (and in my opinion will just go deeper into the closet) should be known...but I really don't need to hear every single experience....they are not interesting....they don't teach us anything....
And I stick by my standard policy - expect it - and call it out loudly as it is happening. Nothing is more fragile than the male ego - especially when he is trying to impress you with his junk. |
