One usher told me that although it’s not official policy - producers of this show like people tweeting and using social media. They think it’s a great and free way to attract an audience.

Are they kidding themselves? How many people in the audience, do they think, are actually on their devices to actively promote the show? I would suspect most audiences are NOT tweeting about where they are, rather they're catching up on emails, or looking to see what their friends have posted on FB, or playing games, etc.

Even if a theatre actively encourages audiences to use social media to promote the show - and some of my local regional theatres do make a point of saying that that's a welcome thing to do at intermission or after the show - I think theatres are being willfully asinine if they think that's the reason people are on their phones during the show.
