| I agree that the lyric as written doesn't quite come off, probably because Hart hasn't got enough syllables available in the music to explain clearly what he means. "Reaching FROM a check" is supposed to mean the opposite of "reaching FOR a check," i.e., paying the tab for the party in a bar or restaurant. This guy not only never reaches FOR the check, he busts his arm reaching FROM the check. But since "reaching from a check" isn't really an idiom or a colloquialism, the intended joke gets obscured. Should have been rewritten. |
