This guy not only never reaches FOR the check, he busts his arm reaching FROM the check.
Actually, the way it was explained to me, I think the intention is that he claims that his arm is busted, as an excuse to why he doesn't reach for the check. (Which again just shows how convoluted the lyric is, lol.)
But for years, I thought it had something to do with some thug breaking Joey's arm ("his arm was busted" BY someone, as opposed to the idea that he busts his arm himself somehow) and that maybe that tied into the sports term "check" (as in hitting someone). Never even occurred to me that "check" could mean the bill at a restaurant, etc - nothing in that lyric sets up that scenario at all.
Terrible lyric by a man who I think was usually so much more careful. |
