I think "reaching from a check" is hilarious. We all know people who also order the most expensive things on the menu and then suggest splitting the bill evenly, regardless of what others ordered, while some other's peccadillo is trying to get out of paying altogether.

I get that. I just refuse to see how the idea of "not reaching for a check" (which would make sense) translates to the nonsensical "reaching from a check." Even if Hart is trying (trying being the key word) to play with the language, it just sounds awkward to me, and doesn't give the right image.
