Sorry - got my song and my ladies mixed up. But where in his traveling salesman's job is Buddy going to pick up the word "avers"? Maybe Ben and his library of books and his UN diplomats might use the word. Would Phyllis pick up "precis" when she's probably bored meeting these folks after many years? Maybe, but Sondheim is mainly being clever here. Phyllis is a chorus girl, not necessarily one who has educated herself that much formally since retiring from the stage. She's gained some sophistication, but using the word "precis" is seems pretty rare, especially in a rapid fire lyric in which Sondheim making dueling criss-crossing rhymes with the names "Lucy" and "Jessie".

Also Fay in "Come Play Wiz Me' using two five syllable words in what's presumably her second language is done to kind of shock Hapgood that she even knows such words. To use one such word is impressive enough, but using both together for her character is kind of f-cking amazing! His "unmistakable authenticity" is his idea that he better make a comeback to this French lady since English is his first language. Otherwise, they're just flirting overtly and Mr. Sondheim is mainly having fun. I love the song, btw.
