I am generally a big Wicked fan, but the lyrics in Popular are extremely grating. Too self-consciously attempting to be clever, but not quite succeeding:
"Don't be offended by my frank analysis
Think of it as personality dialysis
Now that I've chosen to be come a pal, a sis-
Ter and adviser, there's nobody wiser"
And the whole were/are/populer/-lar just takes me out of the show. Why is Galinda trying to rhyme a conversation with Elphaba? It only makes sense if she's in a musical and bursting into song during ordinary conversations. |
