Ethan Slater injury at Spongebob

I took an 8-year-old to see the show last night, and she loved it. But I noticed that near the end of the show the woman playing the mayor handed a white handkerchief to Ethan Slater, who kept it around his hand for a few minutes. Shortly after he tossed it offstage but his hand looked reddened to me from the middle of the orchestra. It was also clear that he was avoiding touching other actors' costumes, keeping his hand away from them. After that, when he joined hands with Patrick right at the end, Patrick apparently had another white handkerchief to help stanch the bleeding. Anyway, we waited at the stage door for Slater to come out, but finally a security guard came out to say he had been injured and wasn't going to sign last night. My little friend was disappointed, but she had such a good time at her first Broadway show that it probably didn't matter. Does anyone know the extent of his injury, or when it happened? I'm thinking it may have been while he was climbing the volcano.
