About a week ago, there was a panel to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the movie ''Wag the Dog'' at the 92nd St. Y, hosted by John Oliver.

During the reportedly tense Q&A, Oliver and Hoffman sparred over Hoffman's apology concerning Anna Graham Hunter, a then-17-year-old production assistant who says that Hoffman inappropriately touched her during the filming of the 1985 TV movie of ''Death of a Salesman.''

Hoffman said things didn't happen the way Hunter said it did, and that he issued his apology, at the insistence of his reps, and was misconstrued.

Oliver said Hoffman's statement gave no indication that it didn't happen, and that Hoffman's reaction felt like a ''cop-out'' and ''dismissal.''

At another point, Hoffman defended himself by citing ''Tootsie'' and how he stayed in costume and makeup as a woman (as Dorothy Michaels).

''How could I have made that movie if I didn't have incredible respect for women?''
