'Beauty and the Beast' gets shut out at Golden Globe nominations

The Globes have a history of loving big-budget musicals, nominating, say, ''Phantom of the Opera,'' ''The Producers,'' ''Mamma Mia!,'' ''Nine,'' etc.

And Damien Chazelle's critically acclaimed ''La La Land'' had a record sweep last year, winning 7 out of 7 Golden Globes.

So, it's kinda surprising to see the live-action Disney blockbuster ''Beauty and the Beast'' come away empty-handed today. No nominations for Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans or even Best Song (''Evermore'' by Alan Menken and Tim Rice, which was nominated by Broadcast Film Critics).

Instead, the Globes nominated ''The Greatest Showman'' for Best Comedy/Musical, along with its star, Hugh Jackman, and Best Song (''This Is Me''). Garrett Hedlund, who helped read the nominations, announced its songwriters as Benj Pa-SEEK and Justin Paul.

Pasek and Paul's tune will go up against ''Remember Me,'' by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, for Disney's animated ''Coco.''
