| No one in the world can match Ms. Andrews' singing, but you don't get the Tony for just singing. I don't know who she lost to, but I will say that on film she's a rather saccharine, mechanical presence. The only film performance of hers I've ever enjoyed was "Victor, Victoria." Ms. Bacall, dubbed by Andy Williams in her debut, has the four Bogart flicks, and a slew of others -- "How to Marry a Millionaire," "Written on the Wind," "Designing Woman," "Murder on the Orient Express," "The Mirror Has Two Faces" -- that testify to her slinky, smoldering presence. THAT, along with the gravely baritone, probably got her those Tonies. |
