''Beauty and the Beast'' was the No. 1 grossing hit movie in America this year, topping $500 million domestically; $750 million, foreign.

I'm no a fan of turning every animated movie into live-action, but clearly the huge box office proves there are tons of people who love it.

Commercially, this 2017 ''Beast'' grossed more in the U.S. than ''Into the Woods,'' ''Chicago'' and ''La La Land'' ... combined.

As for its performances, Luke Evans stood out for me as Oscar-caliber, as he garnered the lion's share of raves as Gaston.

That said, I could see the Academy nominating it for its opulent costumes, extravagant art direction and ''Beast''-ly makeup.
