The play has a large cast (nearly twenty people when you include understudies). Clive Owen is probably making a star salary; Jin Ha is probably making less, but well above scale; the remaining cast are making at least Equity minimum for a commercial production. That's a lot of expenses just on salaries. $400,000 probably doesn't cut it.
As for the holidays: I saw the show over Thanksgiving weekend -- usually a big tourist weekend -- and it was one of the emptiest houses I've seen on Broadway in a long time. Orchestra maybe half-full, mezzanine had about 50 people; balcony was closed. |
