This categorical misunderstanding is something I've rallied against for years. It is utterly insane to me that all musicals are automatically comedies, and competing against other comedies or light-hearted dramedies or genre. Many musicals, including the ones that have won major awards, are not comedies. The most recent I think was Les Miz - who would describe Les Miz as a comedy?! Because it has... 1 comedy song, and some other funny moments or dark sections that get laughs, out of 3 hours of material?
Then at the same time, several musicals would not win against the heavy hitting award-favorite "drama" prestige films that go into the "best drama" category, so even competing in the wrong category it's the only category they might win. But that's true of many films and their category/chances. |
