| But really... how do you stop it? What message needs to be given at the beginning of a show to stop this type of behavior? I know that I personally shut my phone completely off during performances, and it makes me cringe to see my spouse simply put it on silent. From experience, I know that she isn't checking it during the show, however just the idea that something could go wrong with the software in the phone and that it could just start ringing on her during the show makes me so uncomfortable. As an aside, I have an almost two year old who I have said, in no uncertain terms, is NOT allowed to come and see the christmas show I am in this season as I hate the idea that he could start making noise or being fussy during the performance: I may be a bit extreme here, but that is just personally how I feel. But really: what is the message that is given at the beginning of the show that conveys that you absolutely should not be using your cell phone during the performance? I honestly think that at this point the message should be one of shame and disrespect: an audience member is completely disrespecting both the performers on stage, the other people who have put a lot into creating this performance, and the rest of the audience (who has also probably paid some real money to see this show without having to see cell phone lights all around them); an audience member should be ashamed of themselves and their selfishness as they think only of themselves as they decide that playing a game, checking facebook, or doing anything else on their cell phone during the show. (And as a total aside: Chromolume, I am a regular lurker here on ATC and have been since... maybe 2002 and your posts are always something that I read, regardless of the topic. I find you to be incredibly knowledgeable and I believe that we are both in the Boston area. I think that I might even know who you are...) |
