It's extremely well acted. I liked the first half a bit more than the second half because at a certain point its rather didactic intentions start to become clear and that lessened it for me. At that point it started to feel to me a bit too much like the characters were constructed primarily to make an overall point. And I guess I didn't feel like the artistry of the writing was quite enough to make that feel seamless and inevitable.
But it certainly held my attention, and the acting is very fine. I think the Brexit thing will be lost on most Americans. I certainly wouldn't have thought about it in relation to the play if I hadn't read about it here. Nor do I think that most elderly audience members will be pissed off by the content. I'm not that much younger than the characters in the play, and I certainly wasn't pissed off by it. Maybe I'm different from those folks.
Don't sit in the the first row. In fact, I'd avoid the first few rows. Still, when I said that after it was over to the friend who invited me, we went down to the first row and looked up at the stage from there. He said that he'd have liked to have seen the play from there. I definitely wouldn't have liked to sit there for the play. The highest deck I've ever seen, although it is true that there is a good deal of space between the front edge of the acting area and the first row. |
