| Caught yesterday's matinee. What a disappointment. I went for Clive Owen, and I thought he performed extremely well within the specific confines of what this production called for. I was let down by what I took as a fairly straightforward production of the play, showcasing none of Taymor's heightened theatricality. Why she wanted to direct this play remains a mystery to me - no central "thesis" to her take on the play. The set was extremely ugly and clunky - a wash of panels aiming for the fluidity of a memory play, with all the grace and tact of tractor trailer doors being unhinged and opened. The acting varied from "fine" to "comically poor." I thought the rewrites were unnecessary, and served to hinder the play more than anything. Jin Ha was ok, but what was with his voice? I get that everyone was doing their own accents (don't know why, but ok), but Jin Ha's voice had this affected English lilt ... ? Even the decision to pair 95% recorded music with a sole live musician made no sense to me. The nature of the ballet scenes summarized everything wrong with this production: artificial, canned, noisy. A supreme let-down. In its final week, the house was mostly empty. |
