| Heard that the Palace developers wanted the hotel to give up 6 floors-hotel was not willing to lose this much space,so hopefully the plan is kaput! | |

| There is already a lot retail in Times Square anyway. Walking around the theater last week there is a lot of heavy stuff like marble sides to staircase shuck I don’t think many other theaters have. It just seems like the stress could crack a lot of it. | |

| The Palace is particularly historically significant. Prior to being a legit theatre, it was the absolute flagship and pinnacle of vaudeville in America. Then the important theatrical concerts by Judy Garland (in the 1951-52, 1956-57, and 1967-68 seasons), and a notable legit history including original productions of "Sweet Charity", "La Cage", and so many others. Maligning the integrity of the building (already hurt by the removal of earlier marquees, and the construction of a hotel on top of it), and risking damage of remaining original elements, simply to add more over-priced unneeded tourist-trap junk shops facing Times Square was one of the most soulless, crass ideas ever conceived. All real-estate greed, zero arts awareness thinking. Let's hope that horrendous idea is dead with a Lestat (Palace tenant)-style stake through its heart. | |

If it's true that the idea of raising the theater is permanently dead, that's very good news at a time when there is so much bad news for the theater (and the city and the world). Now, who knows, maybe someday the owners of the Palace will go the other way and try to restore the facade of the theater to the way it used to look, including recreating the original marquee? Wouldn't that be something. (See link.) |
