"Maligning the integrity of the building (already hurt by the removal of earlier marquees, and the construction of a hotel on top of it), and risking damage of remaining original elements, simply to add more over-priced unneeded tourist-trap junk shops facing Times Square was one of the most soulless, crass ideas ever conceived. All real-estate greed, zero arts awareness thinking. Let's hope that horrendous idea is dead with a Lestat (Palace tenant)-style stake through its heart."
One hundred percent agreed. If it's true that the idea of raising the theater is permanently dead, that's very good news at a time when there is so much bad news for the theater (and the city and the world). Now, who knows, maybe someday the owners of the Palace will go the other way and try to restore the facade of the theater to the way it used to look, including recreating the original marquee? Wouldn't that be something. (See link.) |
