I respect your affection for the film. My opinion -- admittedly subjective and not terribly valuable -- does line up with the Rotten Tomatoes score (52%, very low in an often grading-on-the-curve metric). The film has never been widely praised. Most cult or near-cult films aren't "Harold and Maude" come to mind -- also turned into a musical.)

I believe your point about making musicals from less known films is a fresh take. In general, we'd do better to see more obscure, less iconic stories, adapted. The big ones --"Moonstruck," "Marty" -- seem to not work so well (I was interested in both of those). I've often seen movies and thought "That would be a swell musical." I thought that about "Chocolat." And when "Amelie" came along, which some people confused with "Chocolat" amazingly enough, I thought "wrong movie." I used to keep a little private list of movies that I believed might "sing."
