On the basis of her beautiful performance in "The Band's Visit" at the Atlantic, I was fairly certain she would be nominated for "Indecent" without having seen it, and was surprised when she wasn't. Once I did see it, not long before the Tonys were presented, I fully understood. She never really had a character to play in "Indecent." You could see that she was gifted, particularly in her musical moments, but there just wasn't enough of her as any one character to justify her being nominated over any of the other nominees.
I did not get the bang out of "Indecent" that so many on this board did, but Richard Topol, who did have a character to play, certainly earned the nomination he received.
I would be shocked if she were not nominated next spring, though it's way too soon to assume her victory is in the bag. |
