Anyone done same-day rush tickets at The National Theatre? (thinking of FOLLIES for closing night)
Posted by: GrumpyMorningBoy (grumpymorningboy@yahoo.com) 10:24 am EST 12/18/17

I'll be passing through London at the start of January, and FOLLIES final performance (January 3rd) is sold out. They offer same-day rush tickets for partial view, per the National's website:

Tickets will be available in person from the Box Office from 9.30am on the day of the performance. 2 tickets per customer and seats may offer a Restricted View.

I do know that thankfully, London is not quite as ridiculous as New York City is when it comes to people camping out for theater tickets, but I am curious if anyone's done this for other popular shows at the National. Naturally, I'm just looking for a prediction of how early I'm gonna have to get my ass down to South Bank.

Any insights appreciated. And naturally, if you know someone who could hook me up, shoot me an email. I would happily return the favor here in NYC. :)

Before you line up for day seats - a few days before, in fact - try the Friday rush (link below). I imagine there'll be a lot of people going after tickets for the last few performances of 'Follies' so I don't know what your chance of success will be, but it's worth a shot.

The Friday Rush over 1000 people join the queue. I tried for a few shows and went on line about 20 minutes before it started and was number 823, was on line over an hour and a half, no luck.

Still, clearly people do manage to obtain tickets via that route. It's worth a shot.

Go on line twenty times a day and you will get tickets. Tickets appear out of nowhere all the time. Did this for Follies, Network and Pinocchio and seats kept popping up at odd times. It's like crumbs thrown at people usually at odd times. You go for it and put the annoying searching constantly in action. American Express gives you a step up I believe. You'll see Sold Out all the time and then there are tickets available. Yes, I just returned from London again and spent 25 days there, only got to see 36 shows...signed theatre junkie

I remember trying to get day tickets for something at the Almeida, with Juliette Binoche. This was back in 1994 I think.
First time we struck out- got there at 7 or 8am, and were WAY too late.

Second time we almost made it- I think we got there at 5am or something (the buses only started running at 4am, and we were poor college students, so no cabs). But we JUST missed the last tickets that day- I think actually only one of us would have gotten a ticket, so we decided to return when we could both see it.

Third time was a charm- we left a tad bit earlier and managed to get tix.

This was NOT the norm at the time- most of my day ticket experiences were not like that.

And I realize it's a totally different theater (and decade). From what I remember of day tickets at the National, I often arrived at a more sane hour. Sometimes even arrived in the middle of the day to see if they had anything, and they did. But I was never trying for a closing performance.

But I wouldn't bank on London being less crazy than NYC, especially for a show like Follies. Musicals always tend to draw more folks than straight plays. And especially the last performance.

It’s been a while since I did a “day ticket” at the National. If you can, you may want to stop by the theatre the day before and inquire at the box office how early they would advise to arrive in the morning to queue for a day ticket. Be aware that there are two other shows (Network, Barber Shop Chronicles) which are also sold out at the National, there will be others in line for day tickets to these shows, whether there is one single line (or queue) for all shows or separate lines would also be a good question to ask the staff at the box office.

As to how early to be in line for a day ticket, I think that depends on how “badly” you want to see the show. Given that this is the last performance, you will be competing for a ticket with those die-hard fans who want to see this production one last time, and with those who love attending a closing performance.

A recent experience last month: I arrived at the Noel Coward Theatre on a Friday morning around 7:30am for a day ticket to Labour of Love (the theatre staff suggested to be in line no later than 8am), the box office opened at 10:30am, I was 8th in line and got the second to last day ticket from a total of 15, there were at least 10 others behind me.

I haven’t done it in the past five years, I had to stop at my age. But popular shows like Follies, especially final performances, can bring out the crowd. By the end of my time, I was in line by 6am at the latest if I was determined to get in. I don’t think things have gotten better, maybe worse.
