This time last year, the advance buzz on "La La Land" was extraordinary. Raves were not just leaked but touted. This new musical with arguably a much bigger star, a more audience-accessible premise, but the same hit songwriting team is arriving with Golden Globe nominations but no buzz and zero reviews, 48 hours in advance. Anyone wanting to look for a critical consensus* a few days before buying tickets on line is out of luck. I'm not suggesting the movie is a stinker, or anything close. But why the embargo? Why is the buzz so unbuzzy? And they're not issuing screeners, by the way. Even the WGA got "La La Land." Odd.
*Rotten Tomatoes has zero reviews, no audience discussion. Anyone who's been to a screening is being kept mum, or opting not to speak. |
