Anyone else blown away by DESCRIBE THE NIGHT
Posted by: schauspieler 01:00 pm EST 12/18/17

Saw this yesterday and thought it was fantastic. Imaginative staging and direction, wonderful bravura performances by the actors, and a play so deep, historic and timely. Made me want to devour everything written by Isaac Babel, an author I am totally unfamiliar with. And maybe do a little writing myself. Afterwards I looked up the Times review and was astonished at its dismissive rejection of the show. One of the best of this year for me.

I too loved it. It makes me so angry to hear people moan that it's too long. Found The Times review appalling. More and more I think that the editors of The Times never go to the theater resulting in them hiring such mediocre critics. I also loved the much shorter "The Children".

I think act II and act III pulled it all together and so glad I caught this interesting play.

I, too, enjoyed this, schauspieler, though clearly it was a creative reimagination of certain real events. I read Babel's 1920 Diary years ago, and recommend it (I wanted to read it again after seeing the show).

In a very convoluted way, this piece reminded me a bit of “Red-Eye to Havre de Grace.” I realize that they are extremely different stagings about two different characters/writers, but they shared a similar dreaminess of putting to stage the unreliable narration of a writer/writer's life. If that makes sense.

Thanks for the info and link. Glad to hear the diary was real. In a play like this with so many switchbacks between reality, fiction ("lies"), history and conjecture, I wasn't sure.

My husband and I both loved it. Both of us thought the three hours just went by so quickly even though the new seats were so narrow.
I thought although it was not perfect, it was still a great play with interesting story.

After the first act I left the theater so fast I was hoping I got hit by a car to make my night a little interesting.

While I wasn't hoping to get hit by a car, I also left the theater after the first act. Similar to GUARDS AT THE TAJ and GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES, DESCRIBE THE NIGHT was disconcertingly phony and manufactured. There was nothing inherently dramatic or interesting going on and I didn't feel like risking more annoyance in the second (let alone third) act.

That was likely the last Rajiv Joseph play I'll see.

was it too "earnest"

did the deep and complex subject matter require greater skill

why do you think DtN appeals to others who are so enthusiatic

My friends and I all loved. Three hours just flew
right by. Terrific ensemble acting. The Atlantic is having a very interesting
season so far.

Count me in as another who was entranced and moved by this production. Marvelous acting, very much to think about and discuss afterward. It can't just be me who thinks Jesse Green seems dismissive of plays that skew to the political left...

I have not ready Jesse Green's review, but I would not say that the play skews to the political left so I doubt that was his reason for not liking it. The totalitarian right and the totalitarian left are each depicted as deadly forces in DESCRIBE THE NIGHT.

I thought it was easily the finest of the four Rajiv Joseph plays I have seen in New York.

I’m starting to loathe Jesse Green. His attitude toward theater seems to say, aim low and you’ll get by - aim high and I’ll tear you down. I’m kind of sick of reading him. The pretention! Ironically, the more overtly dismissive and contemptuous toward theater he is, the more he loses his influence, credibility and power. People are starting to bypass him altogether.

Which "people" are starting to "bypass him altogether"? Have you done a survey? Or do you mean your friends?

And I was! A stellar, ambitious piece given an excellent production. I wish it were running longer.
