The TV audience of ''A Christmas Story Live!'' should've been a slam-dunk for ''The Greatest Showman,'' but it felt like a botched opportunity. Suddenly, Hugh Jackman, dressed as a ringmaster, starts talk-singing ''Come Alive,'' walking through the streets of a set. He's followed by a trio of kids in contemporary dress, but there are dozens and dozens of folks in period costumes. Is this part of ''A Christmas Story''? Unless you knew that Jackman was starring in a new movie musical about P.T. Barnum, what were TV viewers supposed to make of this? Finally, it's revealed after 2 minutes that it's from ''The Greatest Showman.'' Nor is it mentioned that Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the songs to both of these projects.

Since ''A Christmas Story Live!'' was featuring behind-the-scenes tidbits, why not let Pasek and Paul introduce ''The Great Showman's'' live commercial? Something like: ''Hi, we're Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and we wrote the songs for tonight's ''A Christmas Story.'' And now we're excited to bring you the cast of our new movie musical, 'The Greatest Showman,' which stars Hugh Jackman and opens Wednesday in movie theaters!''

Or Jackman could've done the intro: ''Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the songs to tonight's 'A Christmas Story.' And I'm proud to say that they've also written to the new songs to my new movie musical, 'The Greatest Showman,' which opens in theaters on Wednesday. Here's a sneak peek ...''
