| Michael Cacoyanis directed. Mitchell Ryan as Agamemnon came out staggeringly drunk. He slurred and stumbled through his lines in the first scene. Then he went into the wings and vomited into a bucket. Said, "That's better," and continued with the show. Needless to say, Ms. Papas kept him at arm's length, but poor Iphigenia had to be embraced. | |

| Papas and the producers must have forgiven him, since he also played Jason to her Medea for Circle in the Square on Broadway in 1982. I saw him in a lot of stuff both on and (mostly) Off-Broadway, including the best-ever production of THE PRICE with Joseph Buloff, and don't recall ever seeing him drunk onstage or hearing that such was his habit. |

I believe Papas played 'MEDIA' at Circle in the Square uptown in their opening season, 1972, which I saw. "Iphigenia in Aulis" was downtown, in 1967. I believe. |

| My bad for not checking dates. Ryan played Jason to Zoe Caldwell's Medea (w/Judith Anderson as the Nurse) in 1982 - not at Circle in the Square. I missed both that and the Papas/Circle in the Square version. I guess I just don't like seeing Medea on Broadway. |
