Was never a SpongeBob fan, and rolled my eyes every time I heard about it. Then a friend who's a Tina Landau devotee dragged me; we got $30 rush tickets right before curtain.
And guess what? It really is a joy, like everyone is saying. A classic-style musical, fun and easy to follow, with lots of laughs, likable characters, and a gorgeous score that's enlivened by some of the smartest and most creative costuming and set design I've ever seen.
That said, it certainly does not seem to be selling, and I'm not sure how long it'll hold on. The house I saw it with this week was enraptured, so I hope WOM picks up. Honestly, I suggest you grab a discounted ticket and make a visit before it floats away. |
