Boxes at "Hamilton," partial view; good enough?

It's all I could get slash afford for a family member this winter (for a Christmas gift, last minute) who's been trying and failing with the lottery. How bad? Box H, I'm assuming, lines up with row H in the front orchestra. What you lose in upstage corners you gain in proximity. I saw the show from the rear of the mezz back in 2015 (but for $89), so I understand trade-offs. I'm guessing -- if memory serves -- that "Say No To This" and maybe "Take a Break" for example, are not fully visible, depending on which box. And maybe some things up on the upstage rear gallery, barely used in the show. The show is very downstage and if not always center, it's intimate.

The box office* was reassuring, stressing proximity makes up for angle and a few lost moments. I've never sat in boxes on B'way, because I never had to. But for "Hamilton," we break all rules. Especially when buying last minute tickets for a holiday 4 days away. I was happy to land on this.

Will I regret it? Probably, for the price, it's a bargain. This show is insanely expensive now. A 4th row seat by the wall for Easter was $549. That was the cheapest, and they only had 3 in the house. The other were close to $1000.

*By the way: the most patient, generous spirited, and frankly kindest box personnel waited on me. Even held one seat while I made a lengthy call in the lobby. And then promised me a seat if someone else didn't use it (took it). Maybe I expect the worst these days, and especially at a window where they must be beleaguered from people making unexpected demands. This was one of my best box office experiences in NY. And I've lived here sincce '79. All surprising, all a gift.

How do you purchase a Box Seat at HAMILTON?

Do you have to buy them at the box office or are they available online? How much do they typically cost? I remember seeing BILLY ELLIOT at the Imperial many times from the box seats and I really liked those seats; you were very close, the people in front of you didn't block your view (you are looking to the side to watch the show so the people in front of you have no impact on your ability to see), they were cheaper than regular seats, and there was plenty of leg room. Is this true of Hamilton box seats?

At the box office. They aren't more likely to be available -- the secret is out, and they are in the front third of the house -- but they aren't ever premium prices. That's the real gift. They aren't cheap ($229 is no one's idea of inexpensive). But comparatively? If you look at the menu of prices, almost everything is exorbitant for this show (I was offered $549 for a Sunday at the box office, and told it was a steal by someone in line. $549. Yeah.)

If you ask for them, though, you land on a reasonable price ... for this show. There are no cheaper seats, now. (When I saw the show in the autumn of 2015, the range was $79 - $167; that's how fast it's changed.) I'm not complaining -- what the traffic will allow. And it's cheaper everywhere else, including the west coast companies.

I sat in the second box on the lower level on the right facing the stage. It was fine, as most of the show takes place in the center of the stage and on a balcony above it. It was only when some actors were on the far right, which was not that often, that I had some trouble seeing them. There were three seats in the box, and arriving early, I took the one furthest back and could lean out a little to see what was on the far right. Bought the ticket at the box office for the second preview around 4:00, and the ticket was stamped then and there as "partial view." Was assured I wouldn't miss much and didn't. Loved being so close to the stage. It was well worth the price of what was then $167, the most I ever paid for a ticket to a Broadway show.

Why not just see another show whose tickets are not insanely expensive? I mean really, its just a few hours of entertainment. I would imagine one would feel obligated to enjoy it just because of the ticket price.

I paid $229 for a close seat. These days, a good deal. I'm happy. But remember, this is still an event (see London reviews). And I'm buying a seat for someone who's seen a lot (Comet, Evan Hansen, Groundhog Day, Sunday in the Park with Jake). This is a show that means something to many.

It means something because it is expensive and everyone want to belong to the "club" they ban't get into. Otherwise its just a show.

I saw it for $89 in 2015; it was exhilarating and transporting; it likely still is for $229 (nmi)

So the worth of a show is in direct inverse relation to its ticket price?
Or all shows are equal?

Not to most, I think.

A, B, C and D are the lower boxes. The view is quite good. You miss a bit on the far side of the stage. I sat in B once and loved it. E, F, G and H are the upper boxes. So the difference is you're seeing more of the tops of the actors' heads.

Not to put too fine a point on it: H would be higher, looking down, but the right/left angle is approximately the same? Huge chunks of the show (upstage corners) aren't missing; it's a question of the vertical distance atop the performance? Believe me, I'm just happy to get a seat that is closer to the apron than the rear mezz. Actually, just happy to have a seat for about two hundred bucks. They are so scarce before late August.

It's a great deal for $200!

Plus, the leg room is great. That's hard to say at the Richard Rodgers.

I don't know if this link will work, but it's a view from Box G. I think the view from H would be a bit better.

I saw H 4, (I bought H1) and it looks swell. Yes, you're on top of the actors. But there are worse places to be in NYC than atop the Hamilton company. I'm delighted, and again, for the price, to be so close...
