| Whether you enjoyed this live presentation or not (I did, for the most part), you have to admit this was a huge achievement in coordination, and technology. I still am trying to figure out how they do these live musicals (I know they've been doing them on TV for years, but usually in enclosed studios). Some questions I wonder about: 1. Where are the musicians and how do the actors see the music director? How do the actors hear the musicians? How do the musicians and MD hear the actors? I did not see any body mics like you see on Broadway (those huge pimples smack on the forehead of every performer). Nor did I see any earpieces in their ears. With a piece like ACS, where the dialogue flows in and out of musical numbers, the timing is crucial, and you HAVE to be able see the conductor and the conductor must be able to hear the performers, with no time delay that is typical of over the air frequencies. I am assuming that, in addition to the orchestra being in a studio, that a chorus of singers were in the studio as well and we were not actually hearing the ensemble members who appeared to be singing on screen. But the individual actors were not lip synching to pre-recorded tracks (the easiest way to solve this problem). This seems like an obstacle that would be monumental to overcome, yet they somehow did it. I can't figure out the logistics. 2. They were moving actors all over the place and there were times where Broderick in particular seemed to be out of breath. But where does the director sit? Is he being moved around as well or is he in a studio calling the shots? 3. I am assuming that, in the case of bad weather, they would have used shots from the previous day's dress rehearsal for the outside shots. But do they have standby actors to step into roles in case someone gets sick or is injured? If Andy Walken loses his voice the day of the broadcast, what do they do? Of all the technical aspects the one I just can't figure out is the timing with the musicians. I really don't know how they did it. |
