I was most impressed with the staging. Granted I only saw the NT production on film so you have to keep that in mind. The three previous productions I've seen were the 2001 Broadway revival, the Encores production and the 2011 Broadway revival. All of those previous productions have set ALL the action on the stage of the Weisman Theatre so that the important conversations all just happen to take place there. It doesn't make sense to me. I loved the fact that in the NT production the characters were moving all throughout the entire theatre. It didn't feel so contrived. The turntable helped with that a ton. I also LOVED the device of the documentary film makers shooting footage of people on stage. It made all those seemingly non-sequitur snippets of dialogue make SO much more sense. Finally, I loved the way you could see the ghosts lurking in the background through the scenery. They have been present in all previous productions, but seemed so much more obvious and sometimes even intrusive.

In terms of the women, I didn't feel super strong about either performance pro or con. I liked them both. I liked Staunton more than Dee. But I also need to point out that as much as I love the show, Phyllis leaves the least impression on me so I don't feel comfortable making a comment on the performance because it could have just been the character and not the actor. I was VERY effected by the pain of Staunton's Sally. It was so real to me. All that being said, Victoria Clark is the favorite of all the Sally's I've seen. Staunton is maybe the second favorite.
